Sister Cities
When two cities from separate nations become sister cities, they enter a long-term partnership that applies to a broad range of city activities. The partnerships are approved and formed by top-elected officials from the two communities. In Irvine’s case, they have established sister city relations with four international cities.
Tsukuba, Japan
Taoyuan, Taiwan
Seocho-gu, South Korea
Hermosillo, Mexico
Irvine has long recognized the advantages of a diverse population, and as a result, the city established the Sister Cities program to connect Irvine residents with people from other countries and to promote goodwill and a greater understanding of world culture. The city works to engage the full spectrum of Irvine residents who can benefit from and participate in the Sister Cities program.
Working together, these relationships can provide opportunities for tourism and economic development, as well as an increase in trade, educational, and cultural opportunities.
